LONDON, SATURDAY 25th OCTOBER – SUNDAY 27th OCTOBER 2013

A modern day Oscar Wilde – stripped down for parts
Inspired by the Victorian fairytale of the same name by Oscar Wilde, the main characters of The Selfish Giant are 13 year old Arbor and his best friend Swifty. Excluded from school and outsiders in their own neighbourhood the two boys meet Kitten, a local scrapdealer, and begin collecting scrap metal for him using a horse and cart.

Through greed and exploitation, tension builds from the start in this film, leading to a series of tragic events – the pair’s miserable states  portrayed in gut-wrenching detail.

Not an easy watch but it gives back more than it takes in the final scenes!

Bourgeoisie Portraits from a crumbling Empire
Exploring Viennese portraiture during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Facing the Modern: The Portrait in Vienna 1900 at The National Portrait Gallery shows how the imperial and bourgeois traditions of 19th century art were both sustained and broken apart by the innovations of avant-garde artists.

Striking paintings from Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka star in this major exhibition,  gloriously showcasing modern Viennese art pre 1918 – which saw the end of the First World War, and the collapse of the empire.

A Lost City of Gold
For centuries Europeans have been dazzled and inspired by the legend of El Dorado – literally ‘the golden one’. Many different stories were told of El Dorado – sometimes it was imagined as a lost city of gold, once fabled to be located beneath Lake Guatavita (near modern Bogotá, Columbia). The Beyond El Dorado: Power And Gold In Ancient Colombia exhibition uncovers the fascinating truth behind some of these myths.

The exhibition features over 200 priceless objects from Museo del Oro, Bogotá, and around 100 from the British Museum’s collection. They show unbelievable technologically advanced and sophisticated goldworking techniques, including the use of an alloy composed of gold and copper.

Feast your eyes on Saturday afternoon before lunch – Elizabeth Duke’s down Cash Converters this ain’t!

There’s no Turkey Twizzler option so don’t ask.
There are two feeding gaffs up for consideration this week, or perhaps visit both if you’re feeling flush – we recommend them equally.

You could recognise VIVO as an adjective in Italian meaning ‘of a place or atmosphere’ (lively, vivacious, soulful, vibrant). Or as a fairly new Islington addition to the London Foodie map. This is traditional modern Italian at its best – no messing about, all made from scratch.

Deserts to die for, and meatballs fit for the Godfather.

Open 9am – late on weekends

Alternatively: The Central Foundation Boys’ School in Shoreditch is running a School Dinner revival evening on Saturday. Yes you read it right. Don’t worry, sitting down to a four-course banquet devised by Cult Events’ Head Chef Ian Ballantyne won’t mean lumpy custard or twice cooked trays of freezer foods. Expect a novel take on fine dining and relive your detention days in style.

Get Greedy somewhere Seedy
If you fancy laying low afterall this weekend then keep schtum and sneak over to what used to be a scrap leather shop on Bethnal Green Road. Now it’s 5cc Cocktail Club, a one-stop-party-place to booze and schmooze in.

Keep an eye out for the sleazy, neon sign and you’re in the right place – when it’s lit up it means that things are getting heated downstairs.

No Location given – if you find yourself in the toilets of the ground floor sister pub you’re close. Try the other door.
