Jake Bugg is the latest talent to be photographed by Hedi Slimane for the Saint Laurent Music project, which already includes stalwarts of our time Christopher Owens, Beck, Ariel Pink, Kim Gordon, Courtney Love, Marilyn Manson and Daft Punk. As well as the legendary architects of rock and blues; Mr B.B. King, Mr Chuck Berry and Mr Jerry Lee Lewis, a nod to the era in which Monsieur Yves Saint Laurent was establishing himself a formidable, poetic creator.

Pictured during the recording sessions of his second album in Malibu, the singer-songwriter from Nottingham wears his L01 motorcycle jacket – and is credited as the first emerging talent to wear Saint Laurent, visiting Slimane in Paris, May 2012, before his debut disc Jake Bugg was released later that year.

The biker jacket is an icon in the story of Saint Laurent, since Yves’ Beat collection in 1960 for Christian Dior haute couture gloriously anchored to the new cultural movement. Trickled up in crocodile and mink, it would see him expelled due to conservative clients’ reaction. No fear: that rebel yell was firmly in keeping with the leather’s semiotic, as well as incubating Saint Laurent’s own ready-to-wear youthquake taking place in 1966 – without which we wouldn’t be here, talking about this, today.
