This article is part of Weekend Combo – What to do this weekend

We bring you our guide to living well in the world’s capitals, from exhibitions to cinema, food, drink, fashion, music and beyond. Just call it culture and take it, it’s yours.

LONDON, FRIDAY 13th NOVEMBER – SUNDAY 15th December 2013

Black and white with shades of grey
Daido Moriyama, one of Japan’s most influential living photographers to emerge since the early 1960s, is currently presenting an inaugural exhibition of his work, Silkscreens, at Hamiltons Gallery.
The exhibition includes sixteen photographs from Moriyama’s broad portfolio selected by gallery owner Tim Jefferies, produced as silkscreens on canvas. Each work comes in a limited edition of three; covering his dark subject matter in black and white with shades of unsettling grey.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see Moriyama’s beautifully abstractive work in all its gritty and challenging glory.

Until 20th December

Ryes and Shine
Step out of Soho and into New York this weekend with new restaurant Jackson + Rye from restaurateur Richard Caring and the team behind Grillshack. This all-day affair, offering an informal menu from breakfast till late, features an East Coast-inspired menu (buttermilk chicken two-ways, cheese melts, gruyère cheeseburger), American cocktails and killer hard shakes.

We suggest you try the Breakfast Sour (buffalo trace, lemon,
egg white, apricot preserve and peach bitters), to perk you up before braving the cold again after brunch.

Oh and there’s opening offers such as 50% off of the breakfast menu if you join their mailing list this week. So do it.

Jackson + Rye, 56 Wardour Street, London, W1D 4JG
Open daily from 8:00 till late

“May the hair on your toes never fall out!” ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit
The success of Peter Jackson’s first film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit in 2012 has undoubtedly set up his second instalment, The Desolation of Smaug, to be of the most eagerly awaited fantasy films of the festive season. This time the crew are seeking a secret door in Lonely Mountain that will in turn reveal the lair of Smaug the dragon, voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, and help them proclaim their once glorious kingdom.

An epic combination would be an understatement when it comes to Peter Jackson and Tolkien; the perfect example being the use of new technological innovations in this Hollywood blockbuster. HFR or high frame rate graphics make these fight sequences mind-blowing, 48 frames per second rather than the conventional 24. Combined with your 3D specs, it’ll spirit away three action packed hours in the cinema like never before.

Space is Deep
It’s not often that an exhibition opens with a name taken from a song by space-rock legends Hawkwind. This exhibition sees the collective imagination of LE GUN venture into new territory as the group’s collaborative artwork moves from black and white into technicolor. LE GUN work together on each drawing they make, creating idiosyncratic imagery which blends a punk, occult, pop and surrealist aesthetic.

Support these talented emerging and established artists, illustrators, writers and poets, at the Daniel Blau gallery show in Hoxton which newly opened this week.

Another place they don’t want you to know about (but obviously do, otherwise how will they stay open?)
After a long week, most of us enjoy a leisurely/ravenous consumption of ‘adult beverages’. And with the festive (i.e. shopping hell) season creeping upon us we have even more excuse to hunt out relaxing watering-holes in the city.

Those familiar with Social Eating House on Soho’s Poland street may already be in the loop with this week’s speak easy suggestion – The Blind Pig. There’s a cheeky side to this place, perhaps most evident in the cocktails. Who wouldn’t want to try the Thermo Nuclear Daquiri, the Kindergarten Cup, or Cereal Killer? This place is discreet but doesn’t take itself too seriously, pay a visit after a large splurge in Selfridges to settle your post AMEX-hammering nerves.
