HERO magazine – Matthew Miller SS14

With UNTITLED / Mixed Media / DIMENSIONS VARIABLE emblazoned across garments, Matthew Miller is turning his clients into artists for SS14, even though he’s fervent he isn’t one himself. Consider him an enabler, then, keen to dress his youth in robes of ignition at a time expression is challenged.

The designer fills us in on his new SS14 film, produced by London’s Studio Baron, which you can see first here.

“The film was created in the old section of Whitechapel hospital, which I think is soon to be demolished,” Miller explains. “The title of the collection, New Radical Prototypes, is a response to youth and its oppression. From systematic destruction, will come something else, these new radical prototypes.

“At present, many buildings earmarked for demolition remain in place. But they’re already completely overshadowed by the towering mass of HOK architects’ gigantic new towers, two of which are 17 storeys high (one crowned with a helipad) and the other at 10. Together these constitute 85% of the total build.”

Think of that as a (very real) metaphor for Miller’s tribe finding their place in the world.
