California Future Playlist: Melted Toys – the SF band take us on a mindmangling audio trip
Music | 18 February 2014
This article is part of Playlists – Tunes to live by

San Francisco’s Melted Toys are frontman/guitarist/keys player Steven Harkins, guitarist Daniel Rosado, bassist Brian Wakefield and drummer Ole Haarstad. The four piece, who’ve supported Girls on tour (at the invitation of Christopher Owens), are cultivating their own unique sound which we’re not gonna attempt to describe. Be aware their first full-length LP is in the can and waiting for release.

“I have vivid dreams every night that are my source material for lyrics,” Harkins tells us. “I discovered a couple years ago if I eat a hard boiled egg before I go to sleep I’ll have the most bizarre dreams.”

Check out his eclectic playlist below, which is just as full of vivid imagery.

おしえて検索 feat.の子 by Tofubeats
Tofubeats + Noko = match made in heaven’s insane asylum.

Doubt (live) by Stereolab
Refried Ectoplasm and Switched On deconstructed music as I knew it when I first heard them when I was in junior high; up until that point all I really listened to was the records my parents basically forced me to listen to.

Flaform by Pale Cocoon
One of my favourite bands from the 80s.  Not too much info about them out there.

Mutante by Rita Lee
I used to have many music idols when I was in high school.  Now not as many.  Rita Lee is still one of mine, though.

Love Transition by Kosmo Kat
Kosmo Kat’s music always puts me in a good mood.

黒いたまご by Shinsei Kamattechan
One of my favourite bands.

Casino Lisboa by Dirty Beaches
Alex played in our living room a couple years ago just before we started MT.  He drifted through with his greaser/leather jacket crew, pulled out a microphone and sang accompanied by a cassette, karaoke style.  After his set he disappeared.

QSMJAF
by Sotaisei Riron
Don’t know very much about this band but I think they’re big in Japan.  Cool song and video.

Bubble Marble Girl (LO remix) by De De Mouse
My girlfriend introduced me to De De Mouse.  This one’s for my bubble marble girl.

Kiss by Meishi Smile
Meishi Smile is one of my favorite recent discoveries.  He also runs a label called Zoom Lens which has some pretty great releases that I recommend checking out.

Driving into Light Blustery Day by Ken Seeno
When we were on tour with Christopher Owens I had a really random dream Melted Toys was on tour with Ken Seeno in south east Asia and we only played Pizza Huts in small villages.

Eva by Robson Jorge and Lincoln Olivetti
Really great classic tune.  My dad used to make mix tapes and this track was on one of his cassettes he’d play all the time.

Fossil Of Flame ~ Fifty Bell-Trees by Haruomi Hosono
First I had a phase where I was obsessed with Sakamoto’s work, then Takahashi’s for a long period, than Hosono, then back to Sakamoto, and now I’m at Hosono again.

iの数式 (imoutoid’s ComplexFunktion Remix)
My girl and I were in Taipei when she turned me on to this track.  The fight scene in X-Men: The Last Stand happened to be playing on tv in the background at the same time this was blasting on the stereo.
