Keith Richards in Saint Laurent – Blood Luster

We’ve been waiting for it to happen, and now it has. Keith Richards is the first rock icon to claim Saint Laurent’s Blood Luster souvenir teddy, the jacket of the entire SS14 season, as custom stagewear.

Performing with The Stones in Tokyo as part of a sold-out three night residency, the band thundered through a nineteen song set including fan vote winner Silver Train, which had its first outing since 1973.

It was John Pasche who created The Rolling Stones’ legendary tongue-and-lip logo in 1971, originally appearing on Sticky Fingers, whose artwork (and working zip) was conceptualised by Andy Warhol and photographed by Billy Name. Pasche’s red pout is a visual that stands as legendary in its own way as Adolphe Mouron Cassandre’s YSL monogram – both have transcended language to become huge cultural landmarks, beyond time or geography.

That Richards should claim a vampiric, toxic echo of such a graphic, created without reference by Brattleboro, Vermont residing artist Luke Thomas on an intricately embellished jacket by the Parisian house, is perfect – a conceptual case of If You Build It They Will Come.

Thomas also creates sleeves for his brother King Tuff’s discs, put out through Sub Pop and Burger Records. The universe made Keith Richards wear this jacket.
