Miller remixes mod for today’s alienated tribe

Matthew Miller x Ben Sherman: Disaffected Generation Since Forever
By Tempe Nakiska | 2 April 2014

Matthew Miller has collaborated with Ben Sherman on a six-piece capsule collection for SS14, titled Disaffected Generation Since Forever.

Miller’s design creed chants the anthem of youth rebellion and leaning towards truth above trend. With this collaboration it’s clearer than ever, Miller questioning what happens when a generation’s identity is built against pressure to conform.

“I looked at these photographers who captured these movements that were vilified by the press,” Miller said. “It’s like the rave scene and how the papers kicked up about it, we live in the same times now. I’ve taken these movements’ message and turned it into a badge of honour, saying there’s nothing wrong with doing something different, fuck it!”

The badge of honour? A patch, emblazoned with the charged ‘DGF’ slogan, siting boldly on the chest of a disparately clean white t-shirt and shirt. Miller’s tendency to strip and reinterpret takes form as classic Ben Sherman elements are spat out with redefined finesse, the Ben Sherman house check enlarged to become a mod symbol of the new utilitarian.

Roll your cuffs. It’s time to take ownership.
