Things seem to keep speeding up for Max Carver. Last time we spoke, he described his locale of LA as a “city on the run”. That since then he has made the move to jet-paced New York  and worked on two hit series Teen Wolf and The Leftovers suggests he can more than handle the velocity.

Carver worked alongside Justin Long and Christian Slater in his latest project, coming-of-age indie flick Undiscovered Gyrl . In light of its recent premiere at Nashville Film Festival, we caught up with Carver to talk lessons in humility, hypothetical blogs, and ditching brunch for all-nighters.

Tempe Nakiska: So tell us about what’s been happening in your life since we last spoke!
Max Carver: I finished up with Season 3 of Teen Wolf, which was a great experience. We really cranked it up for the finale with a lot of action… and deaths. After we finished shooting Teen Wolf, Daniel Sharman and I flew down to Brazil for the what was probably the best time of my life. So much fun. Brazilians are some of the kindest people on the planet so we had a fun-filled three weeks and got to play some soccer (football) in the Favelas. I really want to go back there for the World Cup or Carnival. In fact, currently brushing up on my Portuguese (thank you Duolingo!).

TN: I hear you’ve moved to New York, how was the move? Are you liking it?

MC: New York is great. I’m here working on The Leftovers, a new series on HBO. Very cool. Wonderful cast, crew and they creative time is inspiring. I am beyond impressed with every script I read – it’s gonna be one hell of a series.

Everything you could ask for is here compressed into a couple of square miles. Los Angeles is a big city, but New York feels like its own universe. So much to do, so many people… so much so that when I wake up, I don’t know how to begin or where to go. I lived in LA for a while. By the time I left, it felt like a small town. I had my spots, my friends and a pretty defined rhythm to my day. Plus I had a car – I miss that little thing. New York, on the other hand, is its own lesson in humility, there are so many interests and industries – I mean, it’s very easy to meet people, but damn, do I feel insignificant! Cork in the ocean. As for lifestyle, I don’t know how they do it here. Days just fly by and the nights go on and on… everything in LA starts with brunch shuts down by 2am. Here, I’m still up from last night. Museums, galleries, music, plays, nights out on the town… too much. That’s a love hate relationship right there.

TN: Why did you make the move?
MC: I made the move for work. We are shooting  The Leftovers all over New York State and it made sense to be right in the middle of it. Pretty cool – I have always wanted to live in New York. I was surprised when it turned out this way. So, I threw all my stuff in storage and I’m squatting in my brother’s (Charlie Carver) apartment. Rent-free New York!

TN: Can you tell us a bit about your role in Undiscovered Gyrl?
MC: Undiscovered Gyrl is a beautiful story following Katie Kampenfelt, this whip-smart and perhaps a little bit self-centred teenage girl who has a bunch of instincts in collision. She wants something more. She wants to be noticed. She wants to be loved for who she is, but she doesn’t necessarily know who she is. As a result, she gets caught up in affairs, older men and fantasies. Her narrative is a sort of fantasy- how she she’s herself in the context of the world. So that’s really what the story is about, this interrelationship between fantasy and reality. When I read the script, I loved the honesty and the fact that Allison (the writer/director) didn’t dress up teenager-dom in Hollywood clothing. It’s more in the vein of Breakfast Club or Thirteen… being young, while fun, can also be dark, dirty and confusing. Plus, I can’t believe Allison, who is a man, could write a young girl’s voice the way he did. Truly impressive.

As for me, I play Katie’s boyfriend, Rory. I’m deeply in love with this girl but have some maturing to do on my own. I can be a bit impulsive and things are pretty confusing for me too. It’s that stage where I don’t really know if what I want is the right thing or what the ‘right thing’ necessarily is.

TN: The film touches on blogging and technology. Do you have a blog?
MC: Ha! Once upon a time I had a blog. I was an English major in college and was inspired to create a blog for my poetry classes. And no, I will not be sharing that hyperlink with y’all.

TN: If you had a blog now, what would it be about?
MC: Well, aside from poetry… [laughs] I think I am kind of a curator? I try to keep it pretty amusing – articles, books, songs, music videos, fashion – things that catch my eye. Every now and then I weigh in and express my interpretation or opinions, for what they’re worth. I even throw in some creative writing or drawings.
What makes the internet so interesting is how it can be anonymous. That can be very liberating if you want to put ideas out the. But it’s also problematic… because there is no accountability.

TN: On that note, last time we spoke we touched on social media. How are you dealing with this world now?
MC: Same as always. I like to keep things private but I’m more than happy to share little bits here and there publicly. I really look up to some of the older folks like Leo or Matt Damon who really express their opinions and ideas outright. I’m getting there, but for now, playing it kind of safe… I’ve seen how over-sharing can come back to get you. Plus, I just like my privacy.

Undiscovered Gyrl will be released in the UK later this year. Teen Wolf Season 3 is out now. The Leftovers premieres on 29th June.
