London, shop it real good

Fendi opens new flagship

Word on the street is there’s a new Fendi flagship and it’s hot, hot, hot. Opening today, the New Bond Street location features a 19th century Flemish-style façade which has been left untouched in favour of historic significance.

Oh, but then there’s the interior, its extensive renovation inspired by Fendi’s Roman roots. Travertine, traditionally associated with classical monuments and architecture, is the absolute protagonist, together with plush leather, vivid bronze and stone. Roman razzle dazzle. Take the mammoth chandelier that connects the boutique’s three floors: made of 5600 pieces of Murano glass, the blue masterpiece stretches to the heavens like a cascade of tubular water.

Art takes centre stage, with the stone-paved ground floor playing host to A Million Times 72 – a work by Stockholm creative studio Humans Since 1982 which takes a graphically conceptual and mechanical and engineered approach to the digital and alphanumerical type font possibilities of the typical analog clock.

Take a plunge to the basement for the full Fendi menswear experience, where a heavier take on the overall aesthetic is employed to offset the rich nature of everything from leathergoods to ready-to-wear, textiles and shoes. The stand-out here is a Felt Chair in Fendi ‘Selleria’ leather by industrial designer Marc Newson.
