This week marks one month until go time for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The fever may still be rising here (fans in Brazil would surely argue it’s pitching already) but online retailer yoox.com is pushing the spirit, this week launching a range of eleven sweatshirts forged by fashion designers from each of the qualifying continental zones.

Ami (France) heads up a roll-call that includes Ksubi (Australia), Opening Ceremony (USA) and Juun J (Korea). Alexandre Mattiussi has, since launching Ami in 2011, built a sound reputation for pieces that are comfortably refined, confident – the kind you would happily welcome to the family of threads hanging inside your wardrobe now, or in a decade’s time. The kind that sit happily side by side a football jersey, best worn with a few Kronenbourgs in tow…

Tempe Nakiska: What memories came to mind when you were asked to design a sweatshirt for this project’?
Alexandre Mattiussi: I am French and I have a particular fond memory of 1998 World Cup. I was 18 and France won it. I remember this moment like it was yesterday. I can’t say I am a big fan but I know that a lot of my customers are. I felt very proud to be chosen to represent France.

TN: In what way?
AM: I love the idea of the sport itself. How this can connect so many people around the world. It’s like music. It brings joy and emotion. And this is priceless.

TN: And the elements of the design?
AM: I made a real “image d’Épinal”. Very cliche. The French flag. The French emblematic rooster. A soccer ball… I wanted to get a very simple graphic image that is easy to read or identify with and also with a sense of humour. That’s why I associated these three ‘icons’ together.

TN: How important, to you, is the sportswear-tailoring balance for everyday wear?
AM: This is all about the balance. I personally dress this way. If I wear a suit, I will wear a pair of trainers. If I have a jean, I’ll wear it with a classic and sophisticated coat. I like the idea sportswear is not just about spirt itself. Look how trainers are trendy now. I don’t run with them, I promise!

TN: What do you love about the sweatshirt?
AM: The sweatshirt is a classic piece of menswear wardrobe. Similar to a white shirt or a navy blazer jacket. This is just a cool piece to wear at anytime.

The collection launches tomorrow on yoox.com and will be available until July.
