For a number of years, sneakerheads have dominated the ‘-heads’ suffix. No longer the case: suedeheads are starting to exercise control, thanks to the powerful allure of A.P.C. subbrand Louis W.

Ecru lambskin, calfskin, nubuck leather (cowhide rubbed to give it the feel of nappy suede) and lambswool make up the swathe of slick jackets for the summer season.

The eight jackets were created with a mixed bag of matinee idols in mind. Named after their silver screen counterparts – Ferris for Ferris Bueller, Tom after Top Gun – the jackets could just as easily be worn by their modern-day equivalent. “The ecru (off-white) lambskin bomber: that would be Harry Styles on a casual day in London trying to avoid the crowded streets and regretting having chosen such a visible colour,” says Louis.

Louis Wong, the granddaddy of eponymous Louis W., started with a capsule collection after honing in on outerwear. “With a strong brand like A.P.C. offering a full wardrobe for men and women, there were not that many options,” Louis recalls. “I knew I wanted to focus on a piece rather than an outfit.” Focus being the operative word, as an eight-bit collection is a ceiling under which most designers would most certainly feel cramped. Not Louis. “My Louis W. concept is helped by the fact that it’s a tiny collection, but I do try to please any man with a true desire to reveal his masculinity.”

“Older people tend to be more respectful about their clothes and I wanted to create something that could attract every age group,” he explains. “I’m tired with trying to pretend that fashion only appeals to youth! Young people can be incredibly quiet in terms of fashion and the real creativity can come later. Our society actually loves youth because it’s like Peter Pan’s Neverland; it feels unreal, naïve and comfortable: the opposite of our world. We’re the Bieber generation.”

Fitting, then, that Louis sees the metallic gold lambswool bomber on the back of “Bieber at Barclays Center when he appears on stage.” The collection, entitled Americana, is now available in stores and at www.apc.fr.
