Launching today in Paris, the latest collection from Tourne De Transmission for SS15 sees designer Graeme Gaughan take another definite step away from the Western creative consciousness in favour of a more spiritual – and holistic – experience.

Gaughan looked to Paul Klee’s Tunisian travels for the collection. Titled ‘HERE’, it reflects the gap in Klee’s work that was filled by the artist’s forays in North Africa. “It was like he was missing something until he experienced that place,” explains Gaughan. “It had the light and colours he had been searching for.”

Thus the prints in the collection reflect Klee’s subsequent dive into into cubism and abstract expressionism, texture and depth added by way of heavy resin hand-printing techniques.

This was just the starting point: the collection also looks to the way North African Twarai tribes fuse traditional garments with Western casualwear in the ultimate escape from European menswear customs. Key pieces include acid washed denim, a sandy leather biker jacket and fabric panelled footwear – a collaboration with ethical German shoemaker EKN.

It’s this commitment to cultural context – and a finely tuned commercial balance – that has seen Gaughan rise his canvas above the norm. “I feel familiarity is an important part of menswear and the way men buy and it’s been fun creating new ways to develop older styles,” Gaughan says of his growing label, which from origins as a t-shirt line has come into its own since FW14. “I would just say that its about becoming comfortable in your choices and in what you feel you want to put out there each season.”

Confidence, the old with the new: it’s a tried and tested combination that continues to work and one that we’ve seen much of over the past fortnight. But as Gaughan is proving, doing it right is the key.

‘HERE’ from Tourne De Transmission for SS15 launches today, Friday 27th June, in Paris.
