Happy Birthday DSM

Dover Street Market steps into the future with a make-over and a month of celebrations

Dover Street Market London opened on the 10th September, 2004. Add ten years to the day and that brings the retailer to a rather massive milestone next Wednesday, celebrations kicking off with a total in-store transformation unveiled this week.

After a three-day closure over the weekend, the store has reopened to reveal specialty fit-outs, the basement welcoming both a new dedicated Nike space and Tokyo’s Good Design Shop (a collaboration shop between Comme des Garçons and D & DEPT). Nicolas Ghesquière’s debut collection for Louis Vuitton has taken over the windows, while a new event space has also been given over to the house for the entire FW14 season. IDEA Books has themed their space ‘Back To The Future’, featuring a wave of first issues and back editions – that’s one not to miss when you get down for a scope.

Then there’s the building’s façade, taken over with an installation by Rei Kawakubo that symbolises the anniversary’s theme, ‘The Next Ten Years’. It’s clear that the retailer is indeed looking towards the future: just a few weeks ago came the announcement that DSML would be joining the realm of social media with an Instagram account. That Comme des Garçons has in the past been aligned with an anti-marketing approach to the internet, it’s fair to say this new digital embrace from the Kawakubo-founded powerhouse is a big deal.

For the rest of the month, prepare to get acquainted with an expansive range of special anniversary products from DSM’s designers, from Rick Owens to Craig Green and Palace Skateboards, all presented on temporary market stalls on various floors. Cute.

There’s also a special range of souvenirs designed and curated by Kawakubo as well as a series of checkerboard printed products produced by DSM in collaboration with Fred Perry, Vans, Eastpak and more. First dibs on the Fred Perry Harrington bomber, a’right?
