Yes, you can now buy Google Glass from Mr Porter
Fashion | 18 September 2014

Mr Porter has launched a strategy to dominate the wearable technology market in the UK as it steps up as the exclusive third party retailer of Google Glass. Launching this week on the site is an edited selection of three Titanium optical frames in exclusive packages, each package including Glass, a pair of titanium optical frames and a UV lens clip for £1,120.

The move is partnered with sister site Net-A-Porter’s launch of Diane von Furstenberg’s Made for Glass collection and though it’s not entirely unprecedented (Mr Porter already stocks some digital fashion pieces including wearable activity tracker FitBit), the Google Glass coup will no doubt catalyse speedy growth in the UK digital fashion market. Apple watch, anyone?

“We pride ourselves on leading the way in delivering the best in service, product, and technology and we are excited to bring Google Glass to our UK customers,” said Toby Bateman, Buying Director at Mr Porter in a press statement. Considering that currently over 40 per cent of the site’s revenue comes from mobile and tablet devices, it’s not that surprising that the retailer is jumping on an opportunity to expand it’s offering as such.

You probably recall the fuss that was initially generated around the Glass Explorer Programme, in which early versions of the product became available for testing by members of the public. And though Google Glass is now available in the retail sphere, the products are still officially prototypes, meaning purchasers will be signed up as Explorers.

“Explorers give us feedback on how the device works, the functions they would like, as well as what they are using Glass for,” said Emily Glass on behalf of Google.

Now let’s be honest – the price tag on these babies isn’t exactly negligible. For less than half the price of a pair you could buy an iPhone, after all. So what’s the attraction? Well, apart from looking like a total baller, Glass affords you hands free techno vision – you can search, email, text, call, navigate and so on without so much as a swipe or a tap.

And though they may still seem a relatively alien concept, retail advancements like this signal a major market shift that will no doubt see such technology become the norm like THAT.
