Beck blasted it out of the ballpark on Sunday night at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, taking home two accolades – including Album of the Year for his 12th studio effort, 2014’s Morning Phase – all the while looking boss in two looks from Saint Laurent’s SS15 Psych Rock collection.

The American musician was one of Hedi Slimane’s earliest Saint Laurent subjects, starring in the SS13 men’s campaign. The video for ‘Part II’ of the campaign saw Beck and campaign co-star Edie Campbell in front of the lens, set to Beck’s Paper Tiger, from the 2002 LP Sea Change.

Post 1994 break-out track Loser, it was Beck’s seminal 1996 album Odelay and the that introduced the singer-songwriter as a progressive force in his field, and from there his funk-infused 1999 effort Midnite Vultures that cemented him as uncommitted to cookie cutter, genre-specific music, instead producing the kind of stuff that still continues to give pop music the shake up it’s begging for. From West Coast folk-rock to soul, and hip hop, to collaborations with The Velvet Underground and The Lonely Island he’s smashed it all. Not to mention his mastery of multiple instruments – you name it, he can play it, and most of them he did play in the recording of Morning Phase itself.

That Beck accepted the award outfitted in pieces from Saint Laurent’s SS15 Psych Rock collection (Short Single Breasted Jacket in black velvet and black Yves Collar Shirt with red polka dots, no less) fits well: the range, which was dedicated to both the hedonistic heyday of psychedelic culture and its current rising, aligns with the same experimental spirit that deserved Beck the accolade, long overdue as it may be. Zero fuss, straight up talent – no overshadowing here.
