From art to music and fashion, function proves an endlessly inspiring platform for creatives. Just as fashion naturally lends itself to experimentation with other forms of design (Rick Owens ancient petrified wood chair, anyone?) so too does art beg to be cast across mediums usually ditched for the ‘mundane’ box. 

Enter Henzel Studios, whose Volume #1 project last year saw us walking all over Helmut Lang and Anselm Reyle with a special collection of ‘art rugs’. Now, their brilliant collision of art and function continues with a new series of – wait for it – pillows, to be shown as part of a forthcoming exhibition at Colette in Paris.

No, these are not your average stocking fillers: the likes of Nan Goldin, Jack Pierson, Anselm Reyle and Juergen Teller have used various mediums, from montage and painting to photography, to mirror cultural and social movements in designs specially formed for the project.

Take Juergen Teller’s contribution to the collection, which looks inwards at his own oeuvre, creating a collage of selected photographs he took of floor-to-ceiling wall montages.

Or our personal favourite: ‘Butt Pillows’, from progressive art collective Assume Vivid Astral Focus. The titillating designs are borrowed from their 2013 São Paulo-exhibited series Abusada, based on photographs taken from magazines celebrating women with large derrières. Peachy.

Henzel Studio Collaborations Art Pillows will debut in conjunction with the exhibition Henzel Studio: Collaborations / Heritage, which runs from March 23rd to April 18th at Colette, Paris, 213 rue Saint-Honoré, 75001.

The pillows will be available from Barneys New York, Chicago, Madison Avenue and Beverley Hills later in the year.
